Holiday Cheer Wrap-Up

It's always funny to look at the holiday season and look at all of the ways we entertain ourselves. Many of us have our traditions that we do, have particular movies that we "have to watch", or music that you have to listen to. For my family, we used to sit around and listen to Dr. Demento's Christmas Album and laugh at all of the funny songs about Christmas, drink eggnog and decorate cookies. As for Alli and I, we have some traditions of our own.

First, we literally cut our first Christmas tree down. Alli watched while I sawed. (I highly doubt this will change over the years.) This is definitely something that we'll continue over the years. The tree was still slightly fresh even when I was taking it down.

Secondly, for the fifth year in a row, we decorated the tree with white lights and silver ornaments. Ali loves it. I finally got up the nerve to explain to her that it just doesn't feel like Christmas without colored twinkly lights. Hopefully, having a kid in the house will sway the vote my way.

Third, Alli and I have things we love to watch. This year we watch...
  1. The Mr. Bean Holiday Special (A Ben Tradition)
  2. The Jeff Dunham Christmas Special (Too Funny!)
  3. The Family Stone (An Alli Tradition)
  4. Love Actually (An Us Tradition)
  5. White Christmas (Us)
  6. National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (Us again)
  7. A Muppet's Christmas Carol (Another Ben Tradition)
I know, I know. No "It's a Wonderful Life". (Honestly, I can't stand that movie. Bleh.)

And lastly, we made our traditional turkey. (Actually they were cornish game hens) Rosemary, Italian Seasoning, Garlic Salt, Onion powder, and Extra Virgin Olive Oil all mixed up and used to cover the birds inside and out.

All in all, we had a great Christmas and New Years.

Got any of your own traditions that you just have to do during the Christmas season?

I'm totally with you about the lights. It's bright and gaudy or nothing.

You two are going to have such fun building your own family traditions! Ours have evolved over time, as the kids have grown up and they had more input. One thing that is now a tradition, but took us more than a decade to establish, is that our Christmas Eve is for our immediate family only. We invite/visit extended family on Christmas Day. This rid us of dividing our time amongst many relatives, and finding us without enough time with just our kids.

Well Ben, I was like Alli with the white lights, and then Ryan came along. Phil and Ryan won and now we have a Christmas tree with colored lights, R2D2, and the Star Ship Enterprise, amongst many other kid favorites.

Actually, the only movie we have faithfully watched every year at Christmas is While You Were Sleeping. We enjoy White Christmas and Home Alone as well as Rudolph and the cartoon Grinch, but don't always get around to watching all of them. Really the only must do is walking Christmas Tree Lane...it's just not Christmasy until you do that!
